card ideas
Today I have been mostly working on greeting card ideas to send to publishers. I worked on a few roughs and then proceded to try and illustrate one of the ideas...I usually get carried away and while I should concentrate on being faithfull to the rough idea, while doing the actual illustration I find my self adding things as I go...Today I tried to be as disciplined as possible... the above is a crop of the final illustration...I am not sure about it at the moment...I'll know if I like it in a few days (I am a bit slow at spotting glaring mistakes)...

Being faithful to the rough idea is always good, I suppose - but don't you find that some of your most interesting ideas come from 'getting carried away'? Variations on a theme...
beautiful maya. It's always tough to know what something will look like at the rough stage so it is really hard to stick to it but an important thing to learn I think. Sometimes it is this that forces me to put more effort into my visuals, and it is then quite a relief to do the painting as it is a bit less 'touch and go', although whether this then dispells some of the magic I don't know.
It can also be really difficult to produce a visual that looks good as line AND as a final painting so some modification is to be expected I guess.
best wishes
Hi Tlc and Lorna :)
Trying to be faithful to the rough is really hard for me because I tend to notice opportunities in the illustration I hadn't thought of while doing the rough...But I am trying to discipline my self more on work that is intended to be sent to publishers and leave the "playing" in personal stuff...though in my book illustrations I do still get carried away...oh well nobody's perfect I guess...
I guess there are times when sticking to your original idea and rough are important - but I'm always thrilled about the 'new inspiration' that occurs as I work, which really can enrich the piece I'm working on. I won't necessarily 'experiment' with them on my final - but may go back ot some of the roughs and play with it there and see if it really works. If it does, than hurray! Whatever it takes to make it better, and involve my passion more fully...
I guess sticking to the rough is important when it has already been agreed by the client, but if your working on spec or on ideas that you will present, then I see no problem ...
Goodluck - I think it looks great by the way ;)
really nice work Maya! I always find that I prefer my original sketch over the finished piece, the sketch always seems to have more life! I'd paint directly onto the sketch if I could but my line work is always so dirty I just don't think it'd work.....DOH!!!!!
Hi Maya, of course you can add me to your links etc. I'd be offended if you didn't. I'll add you as well, when I figure out how to do it. Hehe!
Nice to hear from you - and I love that card idea. Flowers coming out of things are always good (especially people's heads ;))
Ben xx
It's a lovely idea...when the world gets too much, just climb up into your flower and go to sleep...
